Message from the Head

Dear Parents,

The highlight of this week has to be our first ever Careers day at Secondary. Students from Year 7 to 10 spent a day thinking about their future and heard from a diverse group of parents and external speakers about their roles and how they got to where they are today. Careers advice and guidance are key aspects of a successful school and it was wonderful to be able to put on such a high quality event for our eldest students. A massive thank you to Ms Newbury for organising the day and to everyone who came in and spoke to the students. There are some great pictures on the Secondary Twitter account @gessecondary so please do take a look.

For the past three days we have been joined by Tactic Films who are producing our new GES promotional film. It seems as if all of the students have enjoyed being filmed during their different learning activities throughout the week and a drone whizzing around the school has been a highlight for all of us. The film will be ready for next academic year.

Just an advanced reminder of the holiday dates coming up:

  • Wednesday 25 May – we finish at midday at Secondary and 12.20 at Primary*
  • Thursday 26 May to Monday 30 May – School closed*
  • Tuesday 31 May – Back to school as normal

*Apart from students in Year 11 and 12 who have exams on 25, 26, 27 or 30 May and have to be in school.

I want to finish this piece by wishing our Year 11 and 12 students best of luck in their written exams which start on Monday. All of the students have been working so hard both at home and in school. I know they have been brilliantly supported by their teachers and you.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Matt Williams
Head

FROM YOUR TEACHERS

Junior Maths Challenges, from Ms Brewin (Teacher of Secondary Mathematics)

2021-22 has been a fantastic year for extra-curricular maths at GES and we were delighted to see HALF of our Year 7 and 8 pupils achieve a Bronze, Silver or Gold certificate!

The stand-out performance on this challenge was Y8’s Griffin whose near-perfect score has earned him an invitation to participate in the Junior Maths Olympiad next month – an honour reserved for the top 1200 or so performers out of the quarter of a million JMC participants worldwide.

Jun, Leon, Teddy and Ella were our other Gold certificate winners. A massive well done to ALL participants who have thrown themselves enthusiastically into interesting, challenging and difficult problems.

KS3 Maths extension club is taking a break over the next few weeks for the exam season, but we invite any and all who are interested in learning something new and pushing themselves mathematically to join us for more Maths challenge fun from September.
