The youngest children will represent their own ideas, thoughts and feelings through role play, stories and music. They will invent, adapt and recount narratives, taking advantage of performance opportunities in lessons and in showcases.

In Years 3 and 4, children will be practicing and developing their ideas for acting out stories. They will be introduced to improvisation, script work, musical theatre and will begin to explore language and intonation appropriate to a variety of roles. To develop performance skills and confidence, the children will take part in a collaborative showcase performance as well as peer performances during lessons.

In Years 5 and 6, children will learn how to structure simple scenes independently, making use of dialogue, improvisation and other dramatic techniques. Children will work in groups to create either a class performance designed for film, or a proper news report, whilst taking full consideration of the camera and the audience.

At GES, creativity is encouraged and celebrated from the very beginning of a child’s school experience. We engage, challenge and inspire pupils within art lessons, and in a cross-curricular manner, equipping them with the skills and knowledge to experiment and create their own works of art.

Children from Year 1 through to Year 6 are provided with opportunities to experience a range of media and techniques, and are educated upon influential and diverse artists, architects and designers from around the world, both past and present.

In Key Stage 1, our pupils develop their drawing, painting and sculpture skills and are provided with a wealth of opportunities to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination. The children develop a wide range of art and design techniques by using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space.

In Key Stage 2, children continue to improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials. This includes pencil, charcoal, paint and clay. They develop an increasing awareness of different types of art, craft and design. The GES art curriculum equips children with the knowledge and skills to make informed choices, think critically about their own artwork and that of others.

Music is central to children’s creative, cultural and academic development. Through our whole school singing opportunities, engaging music lessons, varied extra-curricular offer and specialist group and individual instrumental tuition, learners are given the opportunity to develop a love of Music during their time at GES.

All are inspired to achieve their potential in Music through this rich curriculum offer, which also provides opportunities to participate in a range of musical events, from House singing competitions, Christmas concerts and the incredible Don du Choeur performance.

For our youngest children, music plays an integral part of school life. Classrooms are filled with songs, rhymes and musical games as children discover elements of music such as pitch, dynamics and timbre.

During their time in Key Stage 2, all children have the opportunity to experience a range of musical instruments as part of their class music lessons. Whether learning to play ocarina, recorder, violin, jSax or ukelele, our children develop their understanding of pitch, notation, rhythm, dynamics, as well as the roles of accompanying instruments in an ensemble, working towards composing and improvising their own melodies.
